About the Position
San José State University is looking for a Senior Database Administrator who will perform duties under minimal supervision of the Systems Support Manager, but works independently. This position will perform analysis, modification, maintenance and installation of database systems, utilities and related software and hardware to ensure the availability, integrity, reliability and scalability of assigned systems. The Senior Database Administrator will also be responsible for the performance, integrity, and security of databases. Additional role requirements include planning, development and troubleshooting of enterprise database systems at a level of expertise to support SJSU and additional campuses.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Database Performance, Integrity and Security Support:
-Monitor performance and manage parameters to provide fast query responses to ‘front end’ users
-Map out the ‘conceptual design’ for a planned database in outline
-install and test new versions of the database management system (DBMS)
-Maintain data standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act
-Control access permission’s and privileges
-Develop, manage and test backup and recovery plans
-Work closely with IT project managers, database programmers and web developers
-Installs configures and tunes operating systems software for optimal performance based on analysis of application failures and best practice configurations
Database Tuning and Problem Management:
-Work with rule and cost based optimizer in Oracle to ensure that campus owned databases are performing efficiently
-Monitor Oracle logs potential security and/or performance issues on campus owned databases
-Perform troubleshooting and proactive monitoring on Administrative SQL databases
-Design, perform and implement database, table, view, index and object model creation, modification, upgrade and migrations as needed to optimize database design and performance.
Database Backup, Recovery, Upgrade & Patch Administration:
-Set up and maintain backup processes on campus owned Oracle databases using RMAN
-Maintains data security and integrity by developing system access standards and procedures
-Monitor Oracle Metalink for security patches and fixes
-Plans and implements modifications and upgrades to system configurations to improve utilization based on analysis of application and production requirements
-Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer science, computer engineering, management information systems or a computer-related field required. We also require five years of progressively responsible experience supporting information-technology based solutions and systems, including experience in database administration on Oracle databases. Equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
-At least two years of experience with Oracle database operations
-Demonstrated high level of proficiency in SQL
-Proven experience in IT at an enterprise level corporation or institution
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
-Knowledge of information technology systems and/or applications, including campus systems and multimedia environments, access procedures, networks and databases.
-Ability to analyze business and technical problems, perform systems analysis and design, identify and assess alternative solutions to make appropriate recommendations, and develop suitable systems and applications.
-Ability to develop clear and understandable documentation for use by business users and other technical staff
-Ability to analyze areas of new technology as it pertains to possible solutions to business problems and asses options available to the University
